| Most of what we do here at
Roofconsult leans on a third-party certificate at some point — a helping
hand bracket and rail’s characteristic tension resistance, a fixing’s ETA or
a cladding sheet or panel’s recommended load span tables. These are the
numbers that turn a calculation into a defensible design. So the ongoing
suspension of the BBA’s UKAS accreditation provides a live design issue. |
| UKAS suspended all scopes
of BBA accreditation on 26 February 2026, and, from latest reports, it may
run until 25 November. The cause of this suspension was down to the BBA’s
2025 corporate restructure, not its technical competence. Existing
accredited certificates stay valid to expiry — but no new certificates can
be issued under accreditation, and existing ones can’t be amended. |
| The squeeze is on new and
changing products. If a manufacturer needs a certificate extended to cover a
new substrate, thickness or fixing pattern, that route is currently closed.
The MCRMA has flagged it directly: the metal roofing and cladding
specification chain is heavily reliant on BBA certification, and members are
facing difficulty obtaining new certificates and amending existing ones. |
| The advice we can offer to
any suppliers, manufacturers and customers to help reduce the affect is to
check the status and issue date of any certificate you’re relying on. Where
an amendment would have been the easy route, fall back on primary evidence
such as any associated ETAs, latest and approved standards, or
project-specific test data assessed against the actual design case. |
